Art Therapy Common Questions
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative expression—such as painting, drawing, collage, or sculpture—along with traditional therapeutic techniques. Led by a licensed art therapist, clients use art to explore emotions, reduce stress and develop coping strategies. You don’t have to be an artist to benefit—art therapy is about the process not the product.
Who can benefit from art therapy?
Art therapy is for everyone. We work with:
- Adults managing stress, anxiety, trauma or life transitions
- Teens and children learning to express big emotions in healthy ways
- Veterans and first responders coping with PTSD, trauma or reintegration
- Cancer patients, survivors and caregivers navigating emotional challenges
- Individuals with disabilities who benefit from inclusive, adaptive programs
- Organizations, nonprofits and workplaces looking to support group wellness
Do I need to have artistic talent or experience?
Not at all! Art therapy is about expression not artistic skill. You don’t need any prior art experience—just a willingness to explore your thoughts and feelings through the creative process.
How does art therapy help with stress, trauma or grief?
Art therapy provides a safe outlet for emotions that may be hard to put into words. The creative process can lower stress hormones, calm the nervous system and help clients process experiences in a supportive nonjudgmental environment.
What happens in a typical art therapy session?
Sessions vary depending on your goals and needs but most include:
- A short check in with your therapist
- A creative activity guided by prompts or themes
- Time to reflect on your artwork and experiences
Every session is personalized—you control how much you share and how you engage in the process.
How long are sessions and how often do they take place?
Most individual sessions are 45-60 minutes while group sessions may be longer. Frequency depends on your needs—some clients meet weekly, others attend workshops or seasonal programs.
