Individual Art Therapy

Your story is full of joy, resilience, and growth. Other times, it’s filled with pain, stress, or experiences that feel too heavy to face alone. At Art Lab Rx, we believe art-making can be the bridge between those inner experiences and the healing process. Through individual art therapy, clients of all ages can find a safe and supportive space to express emotions, reduce stress, and discover new paths to wellness.

What is Individual Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a mental health field that’s been around since the 1900s. Individual art therapy is when a trained art therapist guides a client through the therapeutic process of creative self-expression. Unlike traditional talk therapy, art therapy combines art-making with evidence-based mental health practices. Using tools such as painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, or mixed media, clients are invited to explore their inner world in ways that words alone may not capture.

You don’t need any artistic skills or background to benefit. The focus is not on creating a masterpiece – it’s on the process of creating. The artwork becomes a reflection of your subconscious helping you and your therapist uncover insights, emotions and meaning of circumstances.

Why Choose Individual Art Therapy?

Life presents us with challenges that may leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected. Individual art therapy sessions offer the opportunity to slow down, creatively explore those experiences, and transform your thoughts, which, in turn, change your actions. We provide a safe and healing environment where this can happen.

Common Reasons Clients Seek Art Therapy

Benefits of Individual Art Therapy

Individual sessions allow you to set the pace of your healing journey with the full attention of your therapist. Over time, many clients experience:

Because sessions are individual they are tailored to your unique needs, symptoms, and goals.

What to Expect in a Session

Your first session starts with meeting your therapist in a welcoming, inviting space with lots of light, color, plants, and calming music. You will tour the studio space so you know what’s in every corner. Then we’ll settle in a cozy area to discuss the intake paperwork, the expectations, your symptoms, and goals. Usually, there is time for a short art therapy exercise to give you first-hand experience, along with practicing at least one coping strategy. You will leave the first session with actual tools for handling life’s stressors.

A typical ongoing session will include:

  1. “Arriving” – You will practice square breathing with your therapist to establish being “here and now.”
  2. Review – You will discuss how the last session affected you, and what changed in your behavior.
  3. Create – Make art based on relevant themes, emotions or experiences.
  4. Reflection – Talk with your therapist about the finished artwork, insights or feelings that arose during the process.
  5. Close – Share your “take away” for this session.

Know the age-old saying, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear?” That’s what we’re about. Every session is an opportunity for change.

Individual Art Therapy for All Ages

Art therapy can benefit anyone regardless of age or life stage.

  • Adults – Many adults use art therapy to process anxiety, depression, trauma, grief & loss, coping with stress, for personal growth, and all of life’s challenges.

  • Children – Art making provides a natural way to express feelings and experiences that may be difficult to verbalize.
