Encouraging Connection Through Creativity: Highlights from the April Workshop

We recently had the pleasure of hosting a meaningful event: Encouraging and Reconnecting with the Foundations of Adler’s Individual Psychology and its Applications to Art Therapy. Presented by the Adlerian Community in Action Group, this community-building workshop brought together art therapists and students for an afternoon of learning, reflection, and connection.

Participants engaged in a thoughtful reorientation to the core principles of Adler’s Individual Psychology. The workshop offered not just a return to foundational theory, but an exploration of how these ideas continue to shape and inspire art therapy.

One of the central themes of the afternoon was encouragement—a cornerstone of Adlerian psychology. Through guided discussions and shared experiences, attendees explored how encouragement can be intentionally woven into therapeutic and creative processes. The group examined how fostering a sense of belonging and social interest can transform both individual and community well-being.

Participants also had the opportunity to dive into creative applications of Adlerian concepts within art therapy. By identifying innovative approaches, the workshop highlighted how artistic expression can serve as a bridge between theory and practice. These conversations sparked ideas about how art therapists can integrate psychological principles into their work in ways that are both impactful and accessible.

The learning objectives guided the session and ensured a focused experience. By the end of the workshop, participants were able to:

  • Describe key foundational elements of Individual Psychology

  • Identify creative approaches that integrate Adlerian concepts into art therapy

  • Discuss ways to cultivate communities grounded in social interest and connection

Beyond the educational content, what stood out most was the sense of community that emerged throughout the afternoon. Attendees connected over shared values, exchanged perspectives, and built relationships.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and contributed in this engaging and inspiring experience. Workshops like this remind us of the power of coming together—to learn, to create, and to support one another in meaningful ways.
